A product of Ajax, Ryan Babel was always seen as one of the brightest prospects in Dutch football during his adolescence and eventually caught the eye at the 2007 European Under-21 Championship, a competition organized and won by his country. The former striker was one of the key figures in the brilliant campaign of the Orange and that same summer ended up moving to Liverpool, thus embracing his first overseas project. Despite his recognized talent, Babel never managed to establish himself in Her Majesty's lands and ended up representing several clubs throughout Europe from then on, but he never parted with his property in England... until now. Through a social media post, the former footballer, now 38, informed his followers that he had sold the mansion and explained the many problems he had experienced with some of the tenants, including Royston Drenthe, his teammate on the national team.
"My first home in Liverpool. After 18 years, I've finally left behind all the banking drama and absurd tenant stories that accompanied my first property. The time has come to transfer it to its next lucky owner. This house holds so many memories... It was the first place I moved to after leaving my parents' house, full of emotion, mistakes, and lessons. When I left Liverpool, I rented it to several tenants. One of them was my dear teammate Royston Drenthe. Let's just say he gave new meaning to the term 'tenant from hell.' For some reason, he forgot to pay the rent during his time at Everton and even decided to build a nightclub inside my house without permission. This is incredible!" Babel revealed, explaining why he wanted to sell the mansion now.
"Still, I've always been proud to own this house. It's in a prime location, full of memories, laughter, and a little chaos. The only reason I'm selling it now is because of that variable-rate mortgage they talked me into when I had no idea about real estate. A lesson learned the hard way! Whoever gets this house... I hope it brings as much joy (and perhaps fewer surprises) as it did for me," he concluded.
Royston Drenthe, along with Babel, was one of the key figures in the Dutch U-21 team that rose to the top of Europe in 2007. Like his teammate and friend, Drenthe also left the Netherlands that year to join Real Madrid, but the truth is that he was equally unable to capitalize on his talent. In 2011/12, he was on loan at Everton, when he rented his mansion to Ryan Babel.
